PETEY
(formerly Nash)

3/3/08: This beautiful apricot dilute boy was running loose in an alley in Nashville and was saved by a good samaritan. We're calling him Nash. He's a tiny little thing, probably a mini, and is definitely in need of some TLC. He's very skinny, his nails are turned sideways because they are so long and his eyes are in terrible condition. He has cherry eye in both eyes and probably has some permanent damage to his sight. He's been on his own for quite some time. In spite of having to fend for himself, he has the sweetest temperament. He wiggles all over when you touch him or speak to him. He's house trained.

Nash is seeing the doctor this afternoon, so check back to find out what she says about him.

  Look at that face!

3/12/08: Nash is healthy except for having sarcoptic mange, which we are treating. He definitely has some sight loss, but he doesn't bump into things. He is heartworm negative and on preventive, vaccinated and house trained. He'll be neutered and have the cherry eyes and entropion fixed on 3/20/08. Then he'll be ready for his new home.

4/9/08: Look how much better Nash is after his surgery. He can see!! What a great little guy. The ideal home for Nash would have a fenced yard and at least one other dog so he can run and play with a friend.

6/7/08: This cute little guy is in his new home with his new sister, Bella, and his new mom and dad, Bryan and Carita and he'll soon have a new baby brother, Nicholas, who is scheduled to be born on July 2. Nash (his new name is Petey) waited a long time for just the right family and this is it. He and Bella hit it off from the first sniff. We're really happy for little Petey.

6/30/08: Petey is doing great, he regressed a little in his house training last week, pretty much a function of being too lazy to get off the porch in the summer heat, so we shepherd him on to the lawn and that has solved the problem. He and Bella have become one in the same dog. They sleep next to one another and often run around the back yard with opposite ends of the same rope toy in their mouths, it is very cute, I've been trying to get a picture, but haven't been able to get them to do it when I have the camera handy. Petey has been a perfect fit for our house. Thank you again for the work you are doing. Bryan

Nash and his buddy, Bella

Hi Cindy, Petey is doing well and is acclamating to his new home nicely. He's definitely beginning to feel more at home- he has taken over the dog toys and poor Bella has been relegated to 2nd dog... a position she is fine with, thankfully.  Here's a photo of them resting together. At least some of us are getting some sleep since the arrival of the baby.  Hope all is well with you. Carita

12/2/08: Hi Cindy, Here's a picture of Petey that we shot today for our required 6 month report. We can't believe that he's been with us 6 months. He enjoyed Thanksgiving immensely- scouring for any tid bits that our 6 and 8 year old nieces dropped on the floor. He still acts like a rescue dog when it comes to food. But he's doing good otherwise- is enjoying having Bella to pal around with and I'm sure Nicholas will soon become a good friend too once he becomes more mobile. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. Bryan and Carita Hatmaker

5/5/09: We got really, really bad news from Petey's folks this morning.

Cindy, I am sad to report that we had to put Petey down this morning. He awoke this morning very lethargic and whimpering, so I took him into the vet at 7:00am. He had a large bruise on his stomach and numerous small bruises all over his body; he was having trouble standing and couldn't walk at all. Within the hour he was unable to stand and was having repeated seizures and was not responding to treatment. They did blood work and found his platelet count to less than 6000, with 150,000 being close to normal. At this point he was bleeding out front and back and they had sedated him to help with the seizures.
The vet called me at 10:00 to let me know that she did not feel he would make it through the day that he was declining rapidly. Carita and I left work to go see him, and we were informed that any treatments, blood transfusions, or other medications would not take affect in time to help him, and he had bleeding around the brain, and probably would not recover. At this point it was very evident to us and the vet that Petey was suffering and we along with the vet agreed that euthanizing him was the most humane course of action.
This all come as a major shock to us, Bella and Petey had been in for a bath and check up with the vet yesterday. We have been working with the vet to find a substainable course of action for his ear and skin infections. Petey had been responding very well, he has been playful and a constant companion to Nicholas, our 10 month old. The same tech and vets that saw him yesterday were the ones that treated him this morning, and we are all stunned by his rapid decline. The vet seemed to feel that the best diagnosis was a blood disease or an auto-immune issue. Because of the generally healthy nature of Bella, environmental or poisons have been ruled out.
Petey had become a major part of our family in the last eleven months, and was extremely good with baby. We have many pictures and videos of Petey and Nicholas playing, they are a favorite of our friends and family. Sincerely Bryan and Carita
