LUKE

Luke is up to date on his shots and on heartworm preventative. He is about 12 months old.  Luke will be neutered and have his eyes fixed on Thursday and will ready for adoption soon after he's had a few days to recover.

10/22/08: Luke has really come into his own since being in rescue. He is a confident, happy dog.

Luke

Luke LOVES his tennis ball and can occupy himself for long periods - just him and the ball. He's knows how to put his ball at the top of an incline so it will roll downhill. Then he chases it like crazy. He's a very smart boy.

Isn't Luke a handsome guy?

12/18/08: This beautiful boy is in his new home in Madison AL. It was love at first sight for Luke and Daisy, but Luke really liked Debbie and Wayne, too. Luke and Daisy ran and ran and played with each other in the big back yard. It was hard for 8-year old Daisy to keep up, but she enjoyed chasing Luke and vice versa. Daisy is really going to enjoy having Luke around. Debbie and Wayne are thrilled with Luke. It's obvious he's in exactly the right place. I've posted a You Tube video. Click HERE to see it.

I think I'm going to like it here!! Click HERE to see another video.

12/30/08 Cindy,
Just a note to let you know Luke is still doing good. He's really wanting Daisy to play with him but she has pretty much refused. I've gone out and played with him and she'll watch but doesn't participate.
He played with his ball inside the house this morning. He slept great last night same as the night before; no problems. He's very skittish about any loud noises or quick moves. I set the ironing board up last night and he didn't like that at all (he didn't like the vacuum either). He's still wary of Wayne....one minute he'll
let Wayne pet him and the next minute he'll run from Wayne. Still no accidents in the house.
He's a work in progress! He's only been here 2 days so we're really working with him and understand that it takes time to get him acclimated. We just want him to be happy! Debbie, Wayne, Daisy, and Luke
PS. Hope you like the pictures! He's really liking the doggie "toybox" in the kitchen. He'll drag stuff out and take to his bed, like okay these are mine!

This boy loves his bed!

This is Daisy's toy and this is Daisy!!

12/31/08: He has done so well today. We left him and Daisy outside (outside the pool gate) for 2 hours while we went grocery shopping this morning; he did great. Then this afternoon we had to go for eye exams and left them in the house for about 2 hours (always leave the TV on); he did great! I dread going back to work....
Just got through playing/running through the house. Daisy actually kinda participated...chased each other a bit. He loves to run and jump on our bed and have me jump on after him. He's so funny!
Wayne had to go to work early this morning (5:00). He told me when he got up that Luke jumped up on him (wanting love). Wayne loved it. Wayne is working very easily with him, always letting Luke come to him.
We know it'll be a day at a time.....
We can't help but think someone in his early life has abused him. He is such a sweet boy, not a mean bone in his body.
He ate really well tonight, but I did put a tablespoon of canned food in with his dry...he ate it all.
We are giving him MUCH love and attention. Daisy has not whined or cryed at all since he's been here; I think she's mainly just give out! Sometimes it's hard to still give her the attention she's used to and make sure that Luke gets the love/attention he so needs.
I think he may be used to the nighttime regime; goes to sleep in the living room, get up goes potty around 2ish, beds move to our room, gets on our bed about 7ish.
Sorry for the diatribe, but you know how new Mom's are!!!
(he has Daisy's favorite "baby" in the picture [her hedgehog]; he loves it but Daisy shares}

1/17/09: Cindy,
Luke is getting more acclimated every day that he's here. He really is a good boy. Of course, due to the weather, they had to stay inside the house this past Thursday and Friday while we were at work. This is the first time he had to stay inside two days in a row. He really didn't like it because I think he was bored.....but he was really glad to see Wayne when he got home to let them out!!!! Wayne said he had every toy and
ball out (he has "run of the house, we don't crate him). Also, he said Daisy was grooming his head and ears and he was liking it! Daisy kinda likes him but doesn't really want to play with him, like he's her baby.
But Daisy isn't near as needy as she was before Luke got here. He also had drug the bathroom rug out of our bathroom into our bedroom....he was so bored!!! But no potty in the house; we're so proud of him!

Also, we we rubbing his belly last night and discovered he still has a stitch in his groin area. We'll look tomorrow to see if we can get it out but it doesn't seem to bother him but we know we need to get it out.

His ears are absolutely well; I check them every night.

Luke is absolutely bonded to me; when he gets on our bed in the morning Wayne tries to get him to come over to him. Still a work in progress....I think Wayne really really likes him but is disappointed
that Luke is still a little leary of him, but we're working it. Wayne just loved our little LiNa so much; I've never seen him love one our pets as much as he loved her.

Luke knows he finally has a home....and we are so glad that it is ours.

Thanks for everything that you do....and I hope that in the future we'll be parents to another pei that needs loving parents. Wayne, Debbie, Daisy and Luke McVay

2/1/09: Cindy, Wanted to let you know that our boy Luke is doing wonderful! His personality is growing more and more each day in his forever home. He and Wayne are becoming good buddies (see picture, that's what he does every night with both Wayne and me; he wants us to hold on to him so he can "sniff our face.")
He loves it outside and loves to play. When we play with him, if he gets a little rough, Daisy doesn't like it and thinks she has to jump in to "protect" us. She doesn't bite him or growl, she just tries to divert him and then actually winds up playing with him a bit. Daisy is nowhere as needy as she was before though, so Luke does keep her occupied (although she still acts like she just "tolerates" him, but I think she actually does like him). She's getting a little old though, but I know having Luke here is a good thing for her. They've had to stay in the house all day several times lately since the weather has been so cold or rainy. He drags all the toys/balls throughout the house. Wayne came home one day and couldn't find Luke's tennis balls. He had rolled all of them (he has four) under our bed, either to hide them or irritate Daisy (since she sleeps on our bed all day when we leave them in). It was funny for us, anyway, just trying to imagine his intentions! I gave Luke LiNa's last heartworm med in January (we had one left). Daisy is due to go to vet this month so we can now get both of them on the same schedule. I'll send you a picture when we go to the vet. They are both on their beds right now enjoying a "busy bone" treat. He does love a treat!! He's bringing us a lot of joy and we love him more every day. Luke has definitely tempered our grief over LiNa, although of course as you know, we'll never forget her. But now, it's easier to talk about her and our short good times with her.
He still loves his tennis balls, but has also grown attached to Daisy's toys (probably just to irritate her)! Thank you for bringing Luke into our family! Wayne, Debbie, Daisy, and Luke McVay

Isn't that sweet??

3/9/09: Cindy, Our Luke is doing really well. We took him to the vet last week for his baseline checkup and heartworm meds (he was very well-behaved). He has a condition around his eyes (word sounds kinda like dermetitis something-or-other). They're real red and raw and were running. So, he's on antibiotics for 10 days and we wash around his eyes in the evening and make sure they're dry. Dr. Namie said he may need some additional surgery around his eyes because a big skinfold comes down and causes the condition. But Luke just sits/lays while we wash his eyes and check his ears; no problem at all. His ears are all good; Dr. Namie said he had good ears.
Daisy has had a rough time the past month. She was on anti-inflammatories for 2 weeks because of swelling in her right back knee before doctor could x-ray her; determined there's a small tear in a ligament or something. On top of that, she was on antibiotics for the same 2 weeks for her left ear; didn't do any good. Her ear got totally plugged up, so she had to be put to sleep in order to flush it out (that's when she was x-rayed for her knee). She's now on the same meds that Luke was on when he came to live with us.
So, we're taking both Luke and Daisy back next week for the doctor to look at Luke's eyes and to talk about Daisy's knee.
Luke is a very loving boy. He loves his toys and loves his treats!
He's finally come around completely to Wayne. They're the best of buddies now!!!! I'll send you a picture soon.
Wayne, Debbie, Daisy, and Luke

5/2/09: Cindy, Just wanted to share some pictures with you. Our Lukie is doing great! I bought them a new "baby" [the possum in the picture] and they are having a good time in stealing it from each other. They both just love toys! In the last picture, obviously Luke won out in keeping it to take a nap with! He's playing with his tennis ball right now, hoping it'll quit raining so he can go outside and make sure there's no Westies (next door dogs) or walkers trying to invade his yard. Our grandson and great-niece were here a couple of days this week and he just loved playing with them. He took to them immediately (they're both
7; he's still a bit shy of adults). He wants to play really rough with me and Wayne but was very gentle with the kids. I wash his eyes every night with a warm washcloth and they've been doing really good; no problem at all with his ears. We're going to have to schedule surgery for Daisy next week because of her back leg; she tore a ligamet or tendon. I'm dreading it just because it worries me because of her age, but it's getting worse so we have to do it. I don't know how Luke's going to handle it while she's not here. They can't be apart. The other night when I got home, Wayne told me that Daisy was cleaning his eyes and he was just sitting there letting her do it. She's such a good "mommie" and really does love him.....she just doesn't have his energy for playing. Luke loves it here and we love him! Wayne, Debbie, Daisy, and Luke

This boy is soooo handsome!

9/9/09: Hi Cindy,

Things are going ok. We’ve been walking every day since Daisy’s surgery a couple of months ago. Both Daisy and Luke are very excited when I get home and change. They know it’s time for their walk and then dinner.

We’ve had a problem in that Luke acts very aggressive when we see another person or animal on our walk. He pulls and lunges and has this gargled barking/growling noise he makes. Wayne has had to actually pick him up and carry him back to the house when we can’t get him under control. He’s really not going to attack but if it’s a person we don’t know, we can tell they’re scared of him. Cindy and Steve still bring the dachshunds over to our house and we’ve taken Luke and Daisy to their house, he’s fine. It just seems to be when we’re walking him. But he does act the same way when someone is walking by outside and he’s either in the house looking out the window or he is in the back yard.

On the bright side though, a couple of weeks ago we tried carrying a squirt bottle with us and it is working really well; he absolutely hates to get squirted. When we see someone coming, we just stop, I show him the bottle, say no, and let him calm down. Then we can proceed on. I’m hoping it’ll get better.

Luke finally finished blowing his coat. I was scared he was going to be bald!!!! We kept him bathed with medicated shampoo and he didn’t seem to be overly itchy. But he’s growing all his hair back and is finally white again. Of course, now Daisy’s blowing her coat…….

Luke’s a good boy. We wouldn’t trade him for anything in the world!!!! And, he does love us!

Debbie, Wayne, Daisy, and Luke

3/6/2010: Hey Cindy!
Just a quick note to let you know that Luke is doing great!  He is still a pistol, has unlimited energy seems like.  He's waiting for the spring weather.....he hates being cooped up in the house all day.  But, if Daisy stays in the house, he won't stay outside by himself.
Here's a couple of pictures of him we just took last week.  The pictures show him looking out of the kitchen window on the side of the house.  When he sees someone out that window, he then runs to the powder room in the front of the house and looks out that window to make absolutely sure whatever he saw out of the kitchen window is not in the front yard!  He considers that he has a very important job in our household and is very serious about it.  He must watch out the window and make sure no joggers, walkers, dogs, etc. dare invade his territory.  He's really funny to watch, because he thinks what he's doing is so, so important!!
He still greatly enjoys our walks every day.  He's better with the walking now, but I still have to take the water spray bottle to keep him under control if we see someone else.
He's a sweetie.  We've taken him to the groomers several times and they say that he is very well-behaved while he's there (he doesn't like to go, though!).
Take care and as always, thank you for what you do for the animals,
Wayne, Debbie, Daisy, and Luke

12/8/2010: Cindy,
Just a note to let you know that Luke is doing just wonderful.  Due to cold weather, he's having to stay in the house all day this week, so he's terribly bored and ready for his walk when we get home.

Our Daisy turned 10 years old this past Saturday.  She is doing just wonderful also. Also loves that afternoon walk every day!!

We went on vacation last month and boarded Luke and Daisy at Maddie's Resort here in Madison (we've boarded them there several times before).  Luke just absolutely loves to go there and he loves the people there!!  He's able to play outside with other dogs during the day and Daisy is able to lay inside the house during the day (so they both get what they like!)  Then they both sleep inside at night. They also offer doggie day care and we've taken Luke there several times before just so he'll have playtime and social time with other dogs.  Daisy just prefers to stay at home.  We plan on taking him a couple of times while we're off during Christmas holidays.  The people that work there also just love him and are always very excited to see him -- they say he's unlike any Shar Pei they've ever been around.  They said he's a hoot during play time (they interact with the dogs by playing ball, frisbie, etc. with them -- kinda like planned activities for kids).

I'm sending you some new pictures.  We got Luke a new collar a few months ago and we think it's very fitting -- he thinks he's so bad!!

Take care.  Our family wishes your family a wonderful and safe Christmas!
Wayne, Debbie, Daisy, and Luke McVay
