Scarlett

4/9/08: This little red bear coat only weighs 23.5 lbs - tiny little thing. When we got her from the shelter, her hair was so matted that we had to almost shave her in some places. That's why she looks rather funny in the 'after' pictures. She will be beautiful when her fur grows back. Scarlett likes other dogs, but she is a little wary of men. Scarlett will be spayed and have her eyes fixed soon; then she'll be ready for her forever home!

4/19/08: Scarlett was spayed, had her eyes fixed and rear dew claws removed last Thursday. So she's ready for her new home. She is a sweetheart, but she does need a patient family to help her gain her confidence. Are you that family?

5/4/08: This little girl is a spitfire! She's definitely an alpha female, so she'll need a home with a submissive male or female or no other dogs. She loves to play with other dogs, though, so it would be a shame for her not to have a playmate. We just have to find the right one.

7/12/08: We're having to pull back on adopting Scarlett. She's still terrified of men and has bitten my husband twice, so we have a lot more rehab to do with her. And unfortunately it might turn out that she isn't adoptable or that she is adoptable but only to a specific home. We don't know yet. We'll keep working with her so check back.

Scarlett will need a home with an experienced Shar Pei owner. Patience! Patience! Patience! That's what will be needed for Scarlett to thrive in a new home.

6/7/09: Scarlett has come a long way toward being social and learning to trust. We think she's about ready for adoption if we can find just the right home for her. Check out her Sunday morning walk with Davis. Click here.

6/6/2010: Well, it's been a long time coming, but we've finally been able to introduce Scarlett to other dogs successfully. She's been with males and females and so far, so good! She's really come along way with people, too. She nudges me to play with her and she's also using the pet door from the fenced yard into the laundry room. Fingers crossed that this behavior continues. Check out Scarlett's latest video.

6/30/2010: Scarlett has come completely out of her shell - well, almost. The transformation in her is incredible. She is in the house now with many other dogs and there has not been a single incident of growling or anything else. We started her out in the laundry room (with a gate between it and the kitchen) with Anna and Semper where she had access to the fenced yard through the pet door. Initially she would run out of the room whenever we went into the room. Otherwise she would stay inside almost all the time. Now, she wants to come into the kitchen when the gate is open. She comes in and checks things out, going from room to room. It is truly amazing to see her confidence building with every day. She's still a tiny bit leary of Galon (and probably would be with other men), but I really think she will come around. She hasn't had a fever episode in several months, so the medication that she takes daily is working!

Scarlett would probably had a little set back going to a new home, but we really believe she's up for the challenge.

9/23/2010: Today is a very sad day for us. We lost little Scarlett to renal failure. She stopped eating 4 days ago and her health declined rapidly since then. Life just isn't fair. She had a horrible life before coming here; then it took almost 2 years for her to really trust us; only in the last 6-8 months was she completely comfortable being with us. I loved her so much and will miss her tremendously. R.I.P., sweet Scarlett.

9/23/2010: Today was a very sad day for us. Little Scarlett stopped eating a few days ago and today she was diagnosed with severe renal failure. We've had many losses to renal failure, so it was fairly easy to know what was going on with her even before the blood test and to know how sick she was. Her health failed fast. I had to make the really tough decision to not have her suffer from this horrible disease. Scarlett passed away about 9:30 this morning.

Scarlett came a very long way in her 2.5 years with us. She had finally learned to trust us and to accept our petting and love over the last 6 to 8 months. She was playing with the other dogs. It did our hearts good to see her so happy. And now this. It just isn't fair. But we know she's no longer in pain and we also know we will see her again! We love you, sweet Scarlett.
