Royce

1/4/10: This handsome boy comes to us as an owner surrender from Alabama. Royce is a little over two years old. He is a fawn horsecoat male. Royce, in spite of his previous life (being kept outside in a pen, discarded like an old toy), has a wonderful temperament. He loves having his belly rubbed, he's an excellent patient at the vet, and he's good with other dogs. Royce is heartworm negative and on preventive and is current on his vaccinations. He is house trained and crate trained. Royce will be neutered and have his eyes fixed within the next two weeks. Video will be posted soon. Check back!

1/6/09: Update from Royce's foster mom: Hi Cindy, Royce is a fabulous dog!
His first full day with us was spent doing lots of exploration in the yard and throughout the house.  As he began to feel more comfortable with us and it seemed as if he wouldn't do anything crazy, I let him wander off the leash.  He was only in the crate to nap and have quiet time with a large chew toy.  If I had to leave the house I put him in the crate then also.

He interacted well with Charity  and Isaiah, who do well with other dogs but still don't really do traditional shar-pei play, like chew-face.  Royce initiated play with both, but when it was clear Isaiah wouldn't play back, he moved on.  He played with the tennis ball, sock, booda rope bone, and chewed on a stick.  He had a bath and did very, very well!  He changed color on many parts of his body.  He never even tried to get away or stop me from rinsing him.  I'm amazed at his temperament.  He slept in the crate in the bedroom with us (and Charity and Isaiah) the first 2 nights, but cried to be out.  He ate well morning and night and his rear end seemed to stop itching so much from the deworming.  He had no "accidents" in the house and learned the dog door pretty quickly once he was off the leash.

Last night we decided to let him sleep on a bed in the room like the other dogs.  He slept through the night.
Today has been a good day for him.  His left eye looks much less swollen; just weepy now.  He lets me put the otic ointment in his eye with very little struggle.  He hasn't scratched his rear end at all today and he looks very healthy other than the left eye.

He seems quite natural in the house to have been an outside ignored dog.  He sits and watches us or engages us to play.  He looks out the front window, sharing Isaiah's ottoman.  To get our attention, he does a little noise that's part sigh and part snore.  He also puts his head in your lap when he wants you and he loves to sniff the backs of our knees!  I haven't heard him bark too much; his crate noise is something like he's hoarse.  We've had friends in the house and he did fine once he saw that Isaiah was fine with them.  Kind of protective!

He's just starved for attention, but is very easy.  No food aggression eating in the same room with the other dogs.  We don't have small children or cats, so I can't tell you about those behaviors.  The only negatives would be that he got a stuffed animal from my daughter's floor(can't blame him for that) and that he will start to bite when playing rough.  I have been telling him "no bite" when he does it, then stopping play.  He seems to be pretty smart.  Especially when little training treats are given for reinforcement.

I have been leash walking him on the right leg since he can't see as well out of the left eye.  Better, but really just wants to run uncontrolled.  The owner said he was an escape artist, but I thought he was just trying to get away from there.  He did move toward the open front door yesterday as I went out to water flowers, so the tendency is still there.

I have been doing your yogurt, fish oil, and vitamin E on his food.  He eats the Shredded ProPlan morning and night with no people food.

If there's anything else you want to know, let me know.  In the meantime, I'm so glad Tiffany spotted him.  As cold as it's been here, he would've suffered terribly!  He's been a pleasure to have Royce here! Dee

1/16/10: Royce had surgery on Thursday and he's doing very, very well. He probably has little sight in his left eye, but you'd never know it. He compensates very well. Royce will be ready for adoption in about 10 days. If you're interested, you better apply soon because this handsome guy won't be here long.

2/21/2010: Another failed foster home! No, just kidding. This home is perfect for Royce and we are so grateful that Dee and Jay and their kids wanted to adopt Royce. The children were very upset when we got an application for Royce, so now that he and Isaiah are getting along, the family decided that Royce become a permanent part of their family. Way to go, Royce!!
