Zara came to us from a shelter in North Carolina just last Saturday (1/15/05). She is a very pretty black horsecoat with beautiful amber eyes.

Zara is very sweet, quiet and so well behaved. She is house trained and crate trained.

Zara has been spayed and is current on her vaccinations, but she has not been heartworm tested yet. We will do that early next week. If she's positive, we will treat her before placing her for adoption. If she's negative, she will be ready for adoption very soon.

She has a limp that we are concerned about but will have that checked out thoroughly next week also.

UPDATE 1/27/05: Good news for Zara! She is heartworm negative and Doc says her limp is caused from an old injury to her leg that did not heal correctly.

So, Zara is ready for adoption now! After being here for a couple weeks, Zara's cute personality is really coming out.  She's very affectionate once she's comfortable with you.

UPDATE 3/25/05: Zara left today for her new home in Decatur AL with Wayne and Vicki. The first 24 hours was a little rough, but all are hanging in there and working toward a successful adjustment for Zara and for her new mom and dad.

Vicki reports: just wanted to say hi and let you know how Zara is doing.  She is doing great, we had a great day together yesterday.  She has really settled in, I think she knows she's home now.  I bought her a stuffed toy, but she really loves the little stuffed Sylvester I have, so I gave it to her.  She loves carrying it around....   She looks so regal sitting in the backyard, soaking up the sights and sounds of the neighborhood.

I talked to the lady here that does the obedience training for the American Kennel Club, and told her I wanted to be in the next session, which starts the last week of April.

I just wanted to reassure you that things are going good here.  I am falling in love with my Zara....she is such a sweet girl.  Thanks for all that you do to help dogs like get the chance they deserve at a good home.  I promise to be the best mom I can to her.... and thanks for your patience.

UPDATE FROM ZARA'S MOM 10/14/05: Hi there! I've thought of you many times this past week and wondered how things are going there at your rescue.  We are doing great!  Everyday, more and more of Zara's sweet personality comes through.  Since Ali moved in, Zara has started playing more, she watches Ali be silly and she has started relaxing more and playing more.  She is still very gentle, even when she is playing with her toys. Last night when Zara and I were in the backyard playing and she was running and spinning, Ali thought she would get in the middle of it and ran after Zara and barked a couple times as Zara zoomed by.  Ali ran out to soon the last time and Zara plowed into her full speed.  After Ali got up, she ran to the porch and stayed....(she was fine), I got to tell her if "she couldn't play with the big dog, she should stay on the porch).

I love watching them interact...Ali's passion in life is food, and treats, and guarding bones, any kind, greenies, milkbones, etc.  She will growl at Zara if she comes to close to her hoard, Zara will just look at her with this hurt look on her face...as if to say " what?"  At times though, when Ali leaves her hoard, Zara will snatch one and take it outside and bury it.  Ali evidently knows when one is missing as she will run around the house and yard, until she eventually digs it up, and brings it back in, dirt and all, and I then throw it away.  I think Zara has a sense of humor.... Zara rarely barks, and when she does I know I need to check it out, Ali on the other hand, barks at everything.  Zara will come running to see what she's barking at, and it's like she is processing the thought, "why is she barking at that?" when she looks at me...

Zara is just the perfect dog, I know I keep telling you that, and I really mean it.  I don't know if I've ever seen a gentler dog, she has the softest mouth...we still do out daily walks, although now, Ali goes with for part.  She needs to lose weight, and her little short legs do a good job of keeping up.  Of course, that's not too hard, as Zara loves to smell every little blade of grass.  They get to see their "boyfriends" on most of our walks, Ali's is a little dachshund, Napoleon, who is quite taken with her.  She just growls at him to leave her alone...Zara's is a Chow named Dakota, (they have a black tongue in common), and she automatically starts heading toward his house at the end of our walk... Well, it's easy for me to write a book when I am talking about Zara...she has been a life saver for me.  I burst into tears at a store yesterday, when I saw the pet stockings for Christmas...remembering I just bought Osie a new one last year...I know missing him doesn't keep me from loving her though....it doesn't seem like that should make sense, but it does. Well, I hope things are good with you and your family.  Have a great day...Vicki and Zara and Big AL

9/25/06:

Things are going great with Zara.  She is my shadow these days...  I had gone to Kansas to visit my daughter, and was gone about two weeks, when I got home she spent allot of time ignoring me, (after an excited greeting), and I admit my feelings were hurt.  But after about a week that totally changed, instead of her being outside 95%,(her choice, she has a doggie door), she is now inside with me.  She doesn't like it when I close a door, if I'm in the bathroom, or getting dressed etc., and she will lay in the doorway, "guarding it".   My daughter from Texas was here for a visit, and she noticed the big change in Zara.  Before she wasn't all that enthusiastic about anyone other than me touching her, but this time she was very friendly and let Kathy and her fiancée both pet and love on her.   Zara pokes Wayne in the leg when he gets home from work, as if to say hi.  She doesn't avoid him at all anymore, she has learned to trust him.

I took Zara last week and got her microchipped.  My vet doesn't have the equipment so we went to a different vet, who was so impressed by Zara's being so friendly, and looking so good.  She has other Shar Pei she sees who evidently aren't friendly and have a lot of skin issues.  Zara's leg has been bothering her, so she is on anti inflammatory meds for two weeks to see if that will help, and I'm supposed to keep her from running and putting stress on it.  That works until she sees a squirrel in the yard...

I know I've told you before, but I will forever be grateful to you for Zara.  She is the sweetest dog ever, she is so popular in our neighborhood, when we got walking all the neighbors want to stop us to say hi and pet her.  She even meets several little dog friends, a dashund and a sheltie who think that she walks to see them!  Her "boyfriend", Dakota, a big, sweet chow across the street will cry if he sees Zara walk by and our neighbors have to bring him over to see her if he was inside when we walked by.   Well, I wrote another "book" about my girl!  I just want you to know how important Zara is to me, and how much I love her.

Look at this pretty girl! Intimidating, huh?

10/11/06: This morning as I was wiping Zara's dried slobber off the walls, (do you all spend a lot of time doing this?)LOL, I remembered the scene
from the movie, "Turner and Hootch", where the dog was shaking his
head, slinging slobber everywhere. I was grossed out, and now that
I have a dog who does it, I just smile when my husband and daughters
are grossed out. I guess I look at it like changing a baby, and
Zara is my baby. So, I am often walking through the house checking
the walls and woodwork.

It's also funny when Zara foams at the mouth, when she is eating a
treat she really likes. I wipe her face with a warm washrag and
tell her how messy she is, she just wags her tall, and I think she
smiles at me.... Vicki

11/30/07: Very sad news today. Zara lost her battle with cancer. She had a large tumor in her chest. She fought the brave fight and never complained. Vicki and Wayne's hearts are broken.
