LI NA

1/7/08: These two beautiful girls have had a rough life so far. They came to us from a shelter in Kentucky. Apparently they were turned into the shelter by a breeder of many breeds. We're told there were 75 dogs all totaled. You might ask how these girls could be so sweet coming from a situation like that. Who knows, but they have wonderful temperaments. They just want to be loved.

The black girl is Jai Li (pronounced J - Lee). She is a brushcoat female. She's a tiny little thing - only 31 lbs. She needs entropion very badly and will have it done when she's spayed. When she got here 2 days ago, she had an injury to her left front elbow and is running a little fever because of that. She's on antibiotics and won't be spayed until she no longer has a fever.

The cream girl is Li Na (pronounced Lee - Na). She is even smaller than Jai Li - only 27.5 lbs - she is very thin. Li Na also needs entropion and spaying. She's scheduled for 1/10/08.

Both girls are free of heartworm disease and are on preventive. They are both good with other dogs.

Li Na takes her cues from Jai Li, who is obviously the leader. We would very much like to place these girls together because it is obvious they are very dependent on each other. We learned very quickly, though, that Jai Li is a little selfish with food and water, so we are feeding them separate and Li Na is putting on some much needed weight.

We are working on their house training. They will not use the bathroom in their sleeping area, but they don't know yet that it's not okay to use it other places in the house. They are very quick learners, so we're sure house training will come quickly.

This is why we would like to place these girls together if possible.

1/13/08: Both girls have been spayed and had their eyes fixed and are healing very nicely. Both are also doing really well with their house training. They love being outside so they can run and play in the fresh air and sunshine.

These girls will be ready for their new homes as soon as their stitches come out in about a week.

2/16/08: We haven't had any luck at all finding one home for both these girls, so we're going to have to split them up. We have a great application for Li Na and she met them today, so she will be going to her new home next weekend.

We'll keep working on finding just the right home for Jail Li.

2/20/08: We are tickled pink that little Jai Li might have a new home. Once Li Na leaves and we can test her with another dog, we'll know for sure. If it all works out, Jai Li will have a new brother named Ziggy and will be living in Wisconsin.

2/23/08: Li Na went to her new home in Madison AL today. She was excited to meet Daisy, and, of course, she loved Debbie and Wayne. This is a great home for Li Na. Way to go, girl.

2/24/08: Thanks so much for the pictures!  And you are so right, she is beautiful ...... and so good!!!
She had a few minutes of anxiety yesterday after you left, but we petted her and loved on her and she settled down.  Then later, one of our friends stopped by and LiNa made a very good impression.  She loves to have visitors and show off!!!
I slept on the couch last night because I wasn't sure exactly how she would act after everything got quiet and knowing she was in a strange place.  She was so pooped from all the activity yesterday, she slept through the entire night right on her bed...a little angel!!!!  Now, Daisy on the other hand roamed around a lot and then would just stand and stare at LiNa because she wanted her to get up.  I'll need a nap today.......
LiNa already knows (as of last night) to go to the back door in the kitchen when she needs out.  She has watched Daisy and knows to scratch when she wants back in.  She has not had one accident in the house!!!!!!  We just can't get over how smart she is!
She and Daisy are getting along fabulously.  Actually, she's a little bossy to Daisy but Daisy doesn't seem to mind.  LiNa wanted to play yesterday afternoon and she'd jump around and chase Daisy but Daisy would just run from her.  I know LiNa's thinking, why won't this girl play with me?  But later they went outside and had a big ol' playtime....it was so fun to watch them.  Daisy hasn't moved this much since we lost BeRo.....it's good for her.
She ate all her dinner last night and had a treat before bed.  She knows where the food is .........
I'll send you another check-in this evening.  But just want you to know WE LOVE HER and she's seeming pretty fond of us!!  :>)
Debbie

2/29/08: She is fascinated by the
sideboard in the kitchen and drags stuff out of it when we're not
looking; that's where she found Daisy's bandana that she's chewing on in
the picture.
Having Li Na as part of our family is absolutely wonderful.  Not only
does Li Na seem to be extremely happy, but Daisy just seems estatic.  I
was so worried about Daisy because she seemed to have lost interest in
everything except sleeping and eating.  Now, Li Na is giving her a
workout....and Daisy loves it.  They play together like two
puppies...all the energy!!
Li Na will come up behind Daisy and pull her back legs out from under
her and then Daisy will just sit down on Li Na's head.  I'll have to try
and make a video for you.  Wayne and I just sit and laugh and enjoy!
Still not one accident in the house....(okay, now I'm bragging!)
I plan on making a vet appt next month.  I think Daisy's due in April,
but I'll go ahead and take them next month so I can get heartworm meds.
Daisy's also about due to go to the "beauty parlor" so they'll both be
going, probably next weekend.
I'm so glad Ja-Lei has found a home and hope she's as happy as our

little Li Na!  Debbie

3/10/08:  LiNa went to the "Beauty Parlor" (PetSmart groomer) today with Daisy.
The groomer absolutely loved her!  All we got was such great comments
about her!  When we picked them up, LiNa got a lot more attention from
the people in the store than Daisy.
I saw that Jai-Li (Jade) looks like she has a great home, too.  We
laughed, because, because it looks like Jade's partner looks so much
like Daisy.
LiNa has gotten in trouble a few times because she actually has taken on
a kinda "alpha" role with Daisy which we try not to allow.  But when
when we took then to the groomers today, Daisy and LiNa cannot be apart.
Daisy just absolutely loves her!
LiNa has now decided during the middle of the night that she has to come
and get on our bed.  Daisy didn't like it at first, but has finally
"allowed" her to come on the bed with us.
She is just such a sweetie, and we love that she is part of our
family!!!
Thank you for letting LiNa come to us.  After losing BeRo, she has added
such a light to our life!!!
I'll email you again after Vet visit.
The McVay Family (Wayne, Debbie, Daisy, LiNa)

P.s. sometimes when LiNa plays so rough with Daisy, Wayne has nicknamed
LiNa = LiNa MeNa!!!!!

3/12/08:  Thanks for the article.  Many of these we already practice; we had to when BeRo was here because we wanted to try our best to "push" that Daisy was alpha dog in our household.
So, we always make sure Daisy leaves/enters door/gate before LiNa.  I feed Daisy first and I always pet Daisy first when I get home.  LiNa is selecting the best place on our bed to sleep at night though, because they don't come and get on our bed until the middle of the night and sometimes we wake up because Daisy is whining to get on the bed.

I think Daisy just doesn't want to be alpha.  We had many of the same instances when BeRo was with her.  I don't think LiNa is really meaning to treat her mean so it'll all be okay; there's no growling at any time.  The only time LiNa "mounts/dominates" Daisy is actually when they are playing really hard.  LiNa seems almost like a child that gets all excited and doesn't know when to stop and then the child bites you out of excitement/energy.....not out of meanness.

Nothing going on that we can't handle.  I think if something happened to LiNa, Daisy would be as sad as she was before LiNa got here.

Talk to you later and will send a picture soon.
Debbie

3/31/08: Dear Cindy,
An update for our LiNa.  She is doing absolutely wonderful!
One picture with LiNa getting the best of Daisy, one picture with Daisy getting the best of LiNa!  When they're playing, LiNa pulls Daisy's back legs out from under her and Daisy just sits down on her (of course Daisy has about 20 pounds on her)!!!  We just sit and laugh!!
Another picture of LiNa with her vet, Dr. Namie and his assistant (he's been our vet for 13 years).  The whole office just loved her.  Dr. Namie loves Daisy and has always told us that a lot of the Pei that come into his office have a lot of health problems due to all the puppy mill / ill-breeding stuff going around.  He had a lot of good things to say about LiNa.  He did tell us to make sure we watch her during the summer due to her pink nose because she could get cancer cells if she gets sun burned.  He said she's in excellent health and just raved about her personality (she weighed 40 pounds)!  Got her heartworm meds.
We have had not one problem with LiNa; she was the absolute perfect choice for our family!!!
We love her!
Wayne, Debbie, Daisy, and LiNa McVay
