BIG DOG

A blind, intact male sharpei was found on Augusta Rd in Greenville , SC Christmas weekend.  A good Samaritan saw him almost get run over and quickly picked him up and carried him inside to his wife, saying "What do I do now?"  The poor guy was terribly emaciated and quite stinky.  Big Dog was taken to the emergency veterinary clinic where he was given intravenous fluids and sent home with prescription dog food to help him gain his weight back quickly.  Yesterday he received a full checkup from the regular vet and we have almost all good news to report.  He probably is completely blind, but his entropion does not appear to be causing him much pain; the vet believes it's mostly dry eye.  He will need eyedrops twice a day for the rest of his life but that appears to be the only bad news.  Pretty good, huh?  He's HW Negative, received all his vaccinations yesterday, and had his ears cleaned.  No sign of any ear infection, they look pretty good.  He will go in for a teeth cleaning on the 17 th and afterwards, we will need to schedule an appointment to have him neutered and possibly have his entropion taken care of.

The couple who found Big Dog are willing to temporarily foster him, and nurse him back to health provided someone from Rescue is willing to help her find the dog a home.  We need donations for his surgery but the primary concern at the moment is helping them find the dog a home.  They already have two dogs and do not want a third.  He is a highly-functional blind dog; he may see shadows & light to some degree because he adapts very quickly to his environment.  He's housetrained, is good with kids, and was very good with the vet.  He seems perfectly willing to be handled and is a very sweet boy.

If anyone is willing to foster Big Dog or send donations, please contact me (Peg Perez) at pegip@mvmills.com or for more information about the dog itself, please contact Laura Bell at b_laura@bellsouth.net .

1/30/06 Even though we weren't fostering this sweet boy, one of our applicants ended up adopting him, so we are proud to have him on our success page. Way to go, Big Dog!
